JOAQUIN MILLER
Signature of "the poet of the Sierras" dated 1899.
Autograph sentiment signed: "The Poets/Yours/Wash. 99/Joaquin Miller", 6½x3¼ sheet. Ink note (unknown hand) in lower left corner: "14/3.99". Born Cincinnatus Miller, this poet of the American West changed his name to Joaquin to honor an early California outlaw with a Robin Hood-type reputation. Miller (1837-1913) as a child traveled by wagon train with his parents from Indiana to Oregon. He led an adventurous life, joining both the California and later Alaska gold rushes and suffering serious wounds in a battle with the Modoc Indians. (He was also for a time a school teacher and an elected judge.) Miller journeyed to London in 1870, where his first two volumes of poetry were published: Song of the Sierras and Life Among the Modocs. After gaining popularity in Europe as "the poet of the Sierras", he returned to America and built a home in Oakland California, overlooking San Francisco Bay. 2½x¾ strip cut out of page below signature, removing what had been another signature on verso. Lightly soiled. Ink note on verso (unknown hand) shows through faintly at top edge. Frayed right edge where page was removed from a booklet. Heavily toned. Irregular bottom edge. Slgihtly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
