JOAQUIN MILLER
His 1886 signature on a 4x3 card
Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours./Joaquin Miller/Oct 2. 86",
4¼x3½ card. Born Cincinnatus Miller, this poet of the American West
changed his name to Joaquin to honor an early California outlaw with a
Robin Hood-type reputation. Miller (1837-1913) as a child traveled by wagon
train with his parents from Indiana to Oregon. He led an adventurous life,
joining both the California and later Alaska gold rushes and suffering serious
wounds in a battle with the Modoc Indians. (He was also for a time a school
teacher and an elected judge.) Miller journeyed to London in 1870, where his
first two volumes of poetry were published: Song of the Sierras and
Life Among the Modocs. After gaining popularity in Europe as "the
poet of the Sierras", he returned to America and built a home in Oakland
California, overlooking San Francisco Bay. Lightly soiled at lower right and at
top edge. Faint erasure at upper right. Toned, esp. on outer margins. Stain on
bottom right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
