A rare signature from the 1940's and 1950's boxer, signed "Best Always, Sincerely"
Autograph sentiment signed: "Best Always/Sincerely/Joe Baksi", in blue ink, 5x4. Working as a coal miner as a child and teenager, Joe Baksi (1922-1977) originally joined boxing with the intention of a better life, saying the career would be a way "out of the coal mines". He went professional at the age of 18 and defeated a string of boxers, including future actor Jack Palance. His career was then excelled by another line of victories, defeating boxers Tami Mauriello, Lee Savold, Gunnar Bauerland, and Lou Nova. However, after a number of defeats in Europe, Baksi went into a semi-retirement, only coming out for a short time to fight several obscure and aging boxers. During a fight against Bob Baker, Baksi's manager collapsed, and later died in the dressing room, with Baksi ultimately losing the fight by decision. It would be the boxer's last fight, afterwards going into retirement and joining the teamsters to become an ironworker. His final career record was 61 wins (30 KOs), 9 losses, and 3 draws. Heavily toned. Several holes in top margins. Corners and edges worn and creased. Surface creases. Ink print on verso. Stained throughout.
