JOE BECKETT
Sepia-toned 6x10 studio photo by Dobson Studios of Liverpool of the Commonwealth heavyweight champ sitting on a chair in gloves, trunks, and a workout shirt, signed "Sincerely Yours, Joe"
Photograph Signed: "Sincerely Yours/Joe". Sepia, 6x10 overall, 5x7 ½ image, one surface, printed on cardstock. Photo by Dobson Studios of Liverpool, England, United Kingdom, with embossing in bottom right corner and photo credit stamp in purple ink on verso. Joe Beckett (1892-1965) was a British heavyweight boxer who won the Commonwealth heavyweight belt "Bombadier" Billy Wells on Feb. 27, 1919. However, the National Sporting Club didn't recognize Beckett, so he was stripped of the belt and the title was declared vacant. He wouldn't be denied, though. He just came back four months later, on June 17, 1919 and beat Frank Goddard for the title. Beckett defended his belt twice before relinquishing it in 1923, when he retired. In all, Beckett had a professional record of 61 wins, 11 losses and one draw between 1912 and 1923. Lightly toned, soiled, silvered, creased and bowed. Pen skipped while signing. Signature is beaded in places, but legible. Light scratches (not visible head-on), scuff marks, and impressions on image. Light dents and chipping at top edge. Rounded and worn corners. Paper loss on verso (no show-through). Otherwise, fine condition.
