Photograph of the famed deadeye shown in two images: posing with a rifle and tossing a pair of pistols
Inscribed Photograph signed: "To Carl,/Joe Bowman", B/w, 10¾x8½. Joe Bowman (born Joseph Lee Bowman, 1925-2009) was an American marksman and boot maker known as "The Straight Shooter". Considered the guardian of Texas and western frontier culture, his marksman days began shortly after his service in World War II during which he was severely injured from a land mine explosion. For his service, he was awarded a Purple Heart and 3 Bronze stars. After returning from the war he set up a boot shop in his home town of Houston and began touring as The Straight Shooter. He was the main attraction for all Houston tourists, using his best act of shooting a .22 caliber rifle at an axe and splitting the bullet in two on the edge of the axe blade (the act also involved two lit candles set on each side of the axe, which were extinguished upon the impact of the bullet). Having learned shooting as a young boy in addition to his experience from the war, Bowman was a dignified dead eye, and his marksmanship attracted the attention of James Drury, John Wayne, James Garner and Sammy Davis, Jr. As a boot maker, his styles were in high demand, and he even designed two pairs of boots for Roy Rogers. Fine condition.
