British rocker Joe Cocker (1944-2014), first gained fame singing rock and soul
in English pubs with his group, the Grease Band. He had his first No.
1 hit in Britain in 1968 with "A Little Help from My Friends", and found
success in the U.S. after his appearance at the Woodstock festival in
1969. The following year, his cover of the Box Tops' hit, "The Letter" became
his first U.S. No. 1 hit, and he reached the peak of his success that
year with his "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" tour, which featured Cocker and
over 40 other artists. Cocker returned to the U.S. Top 10 in 1975 with
"You Are So Beautiful", and he had a No. 1 hit with "Up Where We Belong",
the theme song from the 1982 film, An Officer and a Gentlemen, which he
sang with Jennifer Warnes. Cocker, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for
Best Original Song for "When a Woman Loves a Man" from the 1988 film,
Bull Durham, has been heard singing in several other films,
including The Bodyguard, Benny & Joon, Sleepless in
Seattle, Carlito's Way and The Love Letter. He has also
appeared on a number of TV shows, including a notable 1975 appearance on
Saturday Night Live. Fine condition.
