JOE CRONIN
Joe Cronin signs a document for the contract for player Milton J.
Boiling, III for $500.00.
Partly Printed Document Signed: "Joseph E. Cronin" as Vice
President of the Boston Red Sox, 1p, 8½x11. No place, 1952 September
5. Countersigned: "Edward G. Connor" of the Birmingham
Baseball Club, Inc. For payment of $500 cash, Birmingham assigns the
contract of Milton J. Bolling, III to the Red Sox. Joe Cronin, who served two
terms as the American League's President (through January 1974), had been
the A.L.'s All-Star shortstop seven times and enjoyed eight 100-RBI seasons with
the Pittsburgh Pirates. At the age of 27, he had won the 1933 pennant as the
Senators' rookie Manager before being traded to the Boston Red Sox. His #4 was
retired by the Red Sox on May 29, 1984, just over three months before Cronin's
death in September of that year. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1956, he
became in 1959 the first former player to serve as American League
President. Folds. Staple holes at upper left. Lightly creased. Received
stamps at lower margins. Otherwise, fine condition.
