JOE DIMAGGIO
He signs a statement for the US Golf Association that he will not accept prize money for participation in a tournament, thus retaining his status as an amateur golfer.
Document signed: "Joe DiMaggio", 1 page, 8½x11. Undated, printed document titled "Statement from the United States Golf Association", signed by DiMaggio in the space provided for Name of Participant. The Statement informs participants that they must sign and submit this document no later than the first day of an unnamed tournament, or lose the status of amateur golfer. The Statement adds that once the participant has signed it, he shall receive no prize money. Joseph Paul DiMaggio (1914-1999), who played centerfield for the New York Yankees from 1936-1942 and 1946-1951, had a lifetime batting average of .325. The Hall of Famer (inducted in 1955), who was elected to the All-Star team every year, was American League batting champion in 1939 and 1940 and home run leader in 1948. DiMaggio also holds the major league consecutive game-hitting streak of 56 (1941), called baseball's greatest feat by many. He was Most Valuable Player in 1939, 1941 and 1947. At Baseball's 1969 Centennial Celebration, DiMaggio was named the game's greatest living player. Fine condition.
