JOE E. BROWN
Brown handwrote and signed this letter on his personalized stationery to Robert R. Gros.
Autograph letter signed "Joe E". 2 pages, 8¼x10¾, 1 sheet front and verso, on Brown's personalized stationery. In full: "I am rushing an answer of yours of Thursday - cause I would like to have you come and spend a day or two with us, next week if possible. Our picture has only about 8 days work for me. Why don't you and your girl friend motor down. We'll find a spot for you and can help with the cooking. I am planning on flying east on either the 26 or 27th. Thanks for the check for Religion Conference Boys Camp. You will no doubt get an acknowledgement from R.C.B.C. This is the first letter I have written to anyone in more than two weeks Robert as I have been working pretty hard on the picture - and with the 25 mile drive each way it is a long day. I usually grab a plunge in the ocean about 6:15 each A.M. which gets my eyes open. Will be glad to see you - and look forward to hearing from you. Love to you all. Hasta la vista. Hey Hey." "Bob" was probably Brown's long time friend, advertising executive Robert R. Gros. Madcap comedian Brown (1892-1973) played vaudeville, burlesque, and the Broadway stage before breaking into films in 1928. His popularity peaked in the 1930s, but his performances continued into the TV era. He made his last film, The Comedy of Terrors, in 1964. Lightly toned and creased. Light show-through on both sides, which touches handwriting and signature. Small piece is missing from upper right corner. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically. Lightly torn at top edge along left fold. Otherwise in fine condition.
