JERSEY JOE WALCOTT
TLS as a New Jersey sports director, declining a dinner invitation
Typed Letter signed: "Jersey Joe Walcott", 1 page, 8½x11. Trenton, New Jersey, 1975 August 29. On letterhead as Director of the New Jersey Champion Games, Department of Community Affairs, State of New Jersey, to Master John Carrafiell, Broomall, Pennsylvania. In full: "I have received your kind fine letter and kind invitation. As you can imagine, I have a very busy schedule that keeps me on the road a great deal of the time, and, therefore, I cannot commit myself to your lovely dinner invitation. I certainly would enjoy the pleasure of your company and I am sorry that I cannot accept. Thank you again for your interest. With best wishes to you and your family I remain, Sincerely". Arnold Raymond Cream, better known as Jersey Joe Walcott (1914-1994) lost four bids for the World Heavyweight title (twice to Joe Louis and twice to Ezzard Charles) before besting Charles to win the crown in 1951. He beat Charles again to defend his title, but lost it the following year to Rocky Marciano. At age 37, he was the oldest heavyweight champion until George Foreman broke that mark in 1994 (age 45). Walcott appeared with Humphrey Bogart and Max Baer in the boxing film The Harder They Fall (1956), refereed the controversial second Muhammad Ali - Sonny Liston fight (1965), and was New Jersey athletic commissioner for a decade until his retirement, beginning in the year he signed this letter. Normal mailing folds. Creased. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
