Unassembled Wheaties cereal box, 8¼x12 front and back panels, 2¾x12 side panels
and 8¾x1¼ upper and lower panels. Front panel features a 3x2¼ action scene of
Namath throwing a pass during Super Bowl III. Brief background on Namath's
performance imprinted on back panel, which also provides brief descriptions of
other specially marked Wheaties boxes featuring Roger Staubach, Marcus Allen,
Troy Aikman and Steve Young. Offer for "NFL Throwbacks" tee shirts and sweat
shirts on side panel. Quarterback Joe Namath (born in 1943) signed for an
unheard-of $400,000 as a rookie with the AFL New York Jets in 1965. Four years
later, after guaranteeing victory, he led the Jets to a stunning 16-7 upset
victory over the 17-point favorite Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.
Namath, who passed for 27,663 yards and 173 TDs, was the first to pass for
more than 4,000 yards in one season. He was named to the AFL all-time
team, was 1968 AFL Player of the Year and played in three AFL
All-Star games. Namath was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame
