JOE O'GORMAN (1890-1974) and DAVE O'GORMAN (1894-1964) were the sons of Joe O'Gorman (1863-1937), a music hall star from the 1890's, performing with Joe Tennyson as "The Two Irish Gentlemen", perhaps the first team to use the now classic pattern of "comic and straight man". The senior O'Gorman continued with a solo career after 1902, and led the Music Hall War (strike) of 1907. Although the strike led to better pay for variety performers, it seriously hindered O'Gorman's career; he found bookings difficult to obtain thereafter. That same year, however, his sons launched with great success their own act, The O'Gorman Brothers, modeled on their father's, a similar mix of comedy, song and dance to which - in their younger years - they added acrobatics. The brothers were born and raised in England, although they carried forward some of their dad's Irish themes. They were an immediate success, touring the Continent and performing in Berlin, Vienna and Budapest on the eve of World War I. Through the interwar years they starred in variety shows titled Round the Town and Finnegan's Follies, and tirelessly entertained troops during World War II.In 1946, they starred in a Royal Variety Show, and in 1948 took over the leads in the London production Hellzapoppin'. In addition to their stage talents, Joe O'Gorman was an outstanding cricket player, starring for Surrey County in the 1920s.
