Sale Price $342.00
JOE ROSENTHAL. Photograph signed: "Joe Rosenthal". B/w, 2x4 overall, image 1¾x2¾ (one surface). Joe Rosenthal (1911-2006), already a veteran Associated Press combat photographer, won a Pulitzer Prize for his photograph of five U.S. Marines and a navy corpsmen planting the U.S. flag on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. This justly celebrated photo has been the model for a U.S. stamp, for a war bond campaign, and for the U.S. Marine War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. Nearly 7,000 Americans, almost 6,000 of them Marines, including three in the photograph, died in the battle for the strategically important Pacific island. That represents nearly one-third of the Marines killed in all of WWII. Lightly creased, with the right margin cropped off. Overall, fine condition.
