JOE ROSENTHAL. Philatelic Envelope signed: "Joe Rosenthal" at upper margin, 6½x3½. First Day Cover for the 20-cent American Flag Definitive Issue, 20-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., December 17, 1981, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Joe Rosenthal (1911-2006), already a veteran Associated Press combat photographer, won a Pulitzer Prize for his photograph of five U.S. Marines and a navy corpsmen planting the U.S. flag on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. This justly celebrated photo has been the model for a U.S. stamp, a war bond campaign and the U.S. Marine War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. Nearly 7,000 Americans, almost 6,000 of them Marines, including three in the photograph, died in the battle for the strategically important Pacific island. That represents nearly one-third of the Marines killed in all of WWII. Fine condition.
