JOE ROSENTHAL. First Day Cover signed: "Joe Rosenthal" at upper margin, 6½x3½. FDC honoring the American Flag, 25-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Yosemite, CA, February 14, 1989, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Joe Rosenthal (1911-2006), already a veteran Associated Press combat photographer, won a Pulitzer Prize for his photograph of five U.S. Marines and a navy corpsmen planting the U.S. flag on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. This justly celebrated photo has been the model for a U.S. stamp, a war bond campaign and the U.S. Marine War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. Nearly 7,000 Americans, almost 6,000 of them Marines, including three in the photograph, died in the battle for the strategically important Pacific island. That represents nearly one-third of the Marines killed in all of WWII. Fine condition.
