handwritten letter to a colleague
Autograph letter signed: "J T Headley" in brown ink. 2pages,
folded. 5x8. To: "Dr Sir", in part: "I have some things to say that I
withhold solely for the want of such a paper & if the use of my name would
be of any advantage you are welcome to it. I am glad you have found the interest
of my friend Raymond. He is a friend worth having. With my best wishes for your
merits. I remain faithfully yrs." Joel Tyler Headley (1813-1897) was
an American clergyman, historian, Author, newspaper editor and politician who
served as Secretary of State of New York. After being ordained, he preached
at Stockbridge, Massachusetts, but soon moved to Europe and turned to
history writing, producing many works on various subjects. He later accepted the
solicitations of Horace Greeley and became associate editor of the New York
Tribune. Headley was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1855; and
was New York Secretary of State from 1856 to 1857, elected on the American
Party ticket at the New York state election. Toned. Corners rounded. Normal
