JOEY ADAMS
Shown in a comic routine on an early TV stage
Photograph inscribed and signed: "to George -/all my best/Joey Adams".
B/w, 7x9. The career of American comedian Adams (1911-1999), born
Joseph Abramowitz, spanned six decades. Adams honed his comedic skills working
the borscht belt in the summer during the 1930s, where he developed his
signature style of rapid-fire, cynical one-liners. He was also a
long-time humor columnist for the New York Post (he married future
Post gossip columnist Cindy Adams while working there) and wrote over
20 books, including From Gags to Riches, Joey Adams Joke Book,
Laugh Your Calories Away, Here's to the Friars, How to Save the
Earth with Laughter and Encyclopedia of Humor. He appeared many times
on TV, with numerous appearances on Toast of the Town in the early 1950s
and 1960s; he also hosted a radio talk show on New York City's WEVD. Adams was
president of the American Guild of Variety Artists and, in 1961,
toured Southeast Asia for five months with other performers as part of
President John F. Kennedy's Cultural Exchange Program. This tour is detailed
in his book On the Road for Uncle Sam. Signature light and beaded but
legible. Corners creased and lightly worn. Otherwise, fine
condition.
