JOEY BISHOP - AUTOGRAPHED INSCRIBED PHOTOGRAPH - HFSID 214921
Sale Price $252.00
Youthful photograph of the Rat Pack comic genius, inscribed as "Joey 'Mushy Callahan' Bishop"
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Clay/Joey 'Mushy'/'Callahan' Bishop". B/w, 8x10. Ink note on verso, "Oceans Eleven", appears to be in Bishop's hand as well. Nightclub comedian Joey Bishop (born Joseph Abraham Gottleib 1918-2007), a member of Frank Sinatra's celebrated "Rat Pack", appeared in films in four decades, from The Naked and the Dead (1958) to Mad Dog Time (1996), including Rat Pack films Ocean's Eleven (1960) and Sergeant's Three (1962). He also starred in two TV programs: The Joey Bishop Show (1961-1965), a sitcom, and a late night talk show (1967-1969). Bishop was known for his catch phrase, "Son of a Gun!" His inscription here is intriguing. The character played by Bishop in the original version of the Vegas heist movie Ocean's Eleven was named Mushy O'Connors (not Callahan). There was a former champion middleweight boxer named Mushy Callahan (born Vincent Morris Scheer in New York, 1904-1986) who coached actors for boxing roles in movies. Did Bishop confused the name of his character in a classic film, or was he paying indirect tribute to the fighter? Pencil notes on verso (unknown hand). Fine condition.
