JOHANNA MEIER
Black and white 3½x5¼ photograph shown in costume, signed on
verso
Inscribed photograph signed "To Rita Davis-/Cordially,/Johanna
Meier" on verso of photo. B/w, 3½x5¼. Meier, born in 1938, is an
American soprano. She is probably best known for performing Isolde in Wagner's
Tristan und Isolde in 1981 in Bayreuth, Bavaria, Germany. Meier was the
first American to perform this role at Bayreuth. Meier first appeared on the
stage when she was only five months old as the Baby Jesus; she appeared in a
passion play run by her father since 1932, a play she took over when her father
retired in 1991. She made her New York City Opera debut in 1969, as the Countess
in Strauss' Capriccio. Meier has appeared with the New York Metropolitan
Opera 78 times between 1972 and 1989; her official debut at the Metropolitan
Opera House was in 1976, as a last-minute replacement for Montserrat Caballé in
Strauss' Adriane auf Naxos. She retired in 1994. Lightly toned and
creased, otherwise in fine condition.
