JOHN HARDING, 1ST BARON HARDING OF PETHERTON
British field marshal and governor of Cyprus signs name and rank in green ink
Photograph signed: "Harding of Petherton/ F.M." in green ink. B/w, 6½x8½. Harding (1896-1989) began his military career serving in WWI as a second lieutenant, seeing action in the Machine Gun Corps in Gallipoli, and with Prince Albert's Infantry in the Middle East Theatre and the Third Battle of Gaza (1917). After the War, he was posted to India where he moved through the ranks, eventually becoming a colonel after he took command of Western Desert Forces when their leaders were captured, leading the forces into WWII; he continued to serve as Brigadier General and Deputy Director of Military Training and by the end of the war had reached the rank of major-general. Harding continued to move through the ranks, and after his service in the Mediterranean and in the Malayan Emergency he was promoted full general in 1949, and finally to a Field Marshal, the British Army's highest rank, in 1953. In 1955, Harding was assigned the post of Governor of the British colony of Cyprus, a difficult post to hold with the disagreeing Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities who were warring over who should govern the island. Harding's actions, including curfews, school closures, concentration camps, death penalties, and finally the exiling of Archbishop Makarios III were all extremely ineffective and unpopular, leading to his resignation in 1957. Light surface creases. Corners rounded. Pencil notes on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
