JOHN MORLEY
Signature of Morley on a 5x2½ paper
Signature: "John Morley/January 28.1906.", 5x2½. British
author, journalist and statesman John Morley (1838-1923) was editor of the
Fortnightly Review from 1867 to 1882 and of the Pall Mall
Gazette from 1880 to 1883. He entered the House of Commons as a Liberal in
1883. He was Chief Secretary for Ireland (1892-1895) and Secretary of State for
Ireland (1905-1910). Morley was known for his staunch opposition to government
intervention in the economy, alienating labor with his opposition to an 8-hour
work day. He opposed British imperialism in principle, partly because it was too
expensive, but took strong measures against Indians opposed to British rule. He
declared that the Covenant of the League of Nations was "not worth the paper it
was printed on." Morley was ennobled as Viscount Morley in 1908. Left edge
lightly frayed. Irregularly cut edges. Lightly toned around edges. Mounting
residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
