JOHN MORLEY
Handwritten signed letter to Mr. Scripp, praising his poems but declining to print them in the Fortnightly Review
Autograph Letter signed: "J Morley", 1 page, 4½x7. 4 Chesham Place, Brighton, 1875 December 4. To "Dear Mr. Scripp", in full: "The poems are excellent, but I have a stern standing order against them for the Review. So I must return them to you, with many thanks. The cold [illegible phrase] un-pleasant January day in [illegible word]. Yours very truly".  British author, journalist and statesman John Morley (1838-1923) was editor of the Fortnightly Review from 1867 to 1882 and of the Pall Mall Gazette from 1880 to 1883. He entered the House of Commons as a Liberal in 1883. He was Chief Secretary for Ireland (1892-1895) and Secretary of State for Ireland (1905-1910). Morley was known for his staunch opposition to government intervention in the economy, alienating labor with his opposition to an 8-hour work day. He opposed British imperialism in principle, partly because it was too expensive, but took strong measures against Indians opposed to British rule. He declared that the Covenant of the League of Nations was "not worth the paper it was printed on." Morley was ennobled as Viscount Morley in 1908. Two horizontal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
