JOHN CAMPBELL, 9th DUKE OF ARGYLL
Brief handwritten letter by Queen Victoria's son in law, a popular Governor-General of Canada
Autograph Letter signed: "Argyll", 1p, 4½x7. Kensington, 1904 October 20. In full: "Dear Sir: I have pleasure in complying with your request. Yours faithfully". John Campbell (1845-1914), who inherited the title of 9th Duke of Argyll after his father's death in 1900, was known until that time by the courtesy title of Lord Lorne. He married Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria, in 1871, the first time since 1515 that the child of a British monarch had married a subject. He served as Governor General of Canada from 1878-1883. With Princess Louise at his side, he proved a popular and successful Governor-General, promoting Canadian arts and industry, and - despite the noble lineage - mixing comfortably with Canadian society. Creased. Glue remnants on verso lightly show through. Nailhead-size hole has formed below the greeting, not touching text. Toned. Normal mailing folds. Heavy adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
