Third Person Autograph Letter. Grosvenor Court, Belgrave Square [London], 1872 July 10. John Campbell (1845-1914), who inherited the title of 9th Duke of Argyll after his father's death in 1900, was known until that time by the courtesy title of Lord Lorne. He married Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria, in 1871, the first time since 1515 that the child of a British monarch had married a subject. He served as Governor General of Canada from 1878-1883. With Princess Louise at his side, he proved a popular and successful Governor-General, promoting Canadian arts and industry, and - despite the noble lineage - mixing comfortably with Canadian society.
