JOHN A. GRISWOLD
His signed autograph sentiment on a slip affixed to an autograph card
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Very truly etc./John A. Griswold, 4 x1¾
slip affixed to a printed autograph card (4¾ x2½). John Augustus Griswold
(1818-1872) built the Renssalaer Iron Works in Troy, New York into a
major producer and supplier to the railroads. He owned the exclusive US
patent for the Bessemer process of steel making. Griswold was Mayor of Troy
in 1855. Elected to Congress as a War Democrat in 1862, Griswold was twice
re-elected as a Republican. He was the Republican nominee for New York Governor
in 1868, losing a close contest. The New York Times stated in his obituary
four years later that Griswold was "undoubtedly elected, but was counted out by
frauds." Griswold's greatest achievement may have been his contribution to
the construction of the ironclad Monitor, which dueled the CSS
ironclad Virginia at the Battle of Hampton Roads (1862). A member of the
Congressional Naval Affairs Committee and convinced that Ericsson's design for
an ironclad was sound, Griswold was the principal member of a group of
private entrepreneurs who put up the money to build the Monitor, having
been informed by the Navy that they would be repaid only if the design proved
successful in battle. Lightly soiled. Otherwise fine
condition.
