JOHN A. GRONOUSKI. TLS: "John A. Gronouski" as U.S. Ambassador to Poland, 1p, 8x10½. Warsaw, Poland, 1967 November 7. On letterhead of Embassy of the United States of America to Mr. Danny Franklin, Sunnyslope, Arizona. In full: "Thank you very much for your birthday greetings and kind words about my work in the Government and in Poland; I have found it both interesting and fascinating. As you requested, I am enclosing a photograph, and thank you again for your best wishes. Sincerely". Photograph not present. John Austin Gronouski (1919-1996) was Ambassador to Poland from 1965-1969. He had previously served as U.S. Postmaster General under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson (1963-1965), becoming the first Polish-American Cabinet member. In 1969, Johnson, who had appointed Gronouski as Ambassador, asked him to be the founding dean of the LBJ School, where Gronouski served until his retirement in 1974. Gronouski, a veteran of WWII, had joined the Wisconsin Department of Taxation in 1959, becoming Wisconsin State Commissioner of Taxation in 1960. Slightly creased. ¼-inch tear at upper blank edge. Fine condition.
