Andrew Hiestand (1824-1890) was a US Representative from Pennsylvania's
9th Congressional District, serving from 1885-1889. Born in East Donegal
Township, Pennsylvania, Heistand studied law at the Pennsylvania College at
Gettysburg. He established a law practice in Lancaster in 1849, and was later
elected as a Whig to the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives in 1852,
1853, and 1856. After giving up his law firm for investments in the Lancaster
Examiner, Hiestand was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate. He then
was appointed a naval officer at the port of Philadelphia by President Ulysses
S. Grant in 1871, serving until 1879. He died shortly after his two terms in
Congress in 1890. Fine condition.
