Signature: "Jno. A. J. Creswell/Postmaster General/May 13th 1873.", 3½x2¼ card. John Angel James Creswell (1828-1891) served as Postmaster General under President Ulysses S. Grant from March 6th 1869 until he tendered his resignation on July 6th 1874. An attorney and later president of two banks, Creswell had begun his political career in Maryland's House of Delegates (1861-1862) before serving as a U.S. Representative (1863-1865) and U.S. Senator (1865-1867). A candidate for the 1868 Republican nomination for Vice President, Creswell was later a counsel for the U.S. for the Alabama Claims Commission (1874-1876). Mounting remnants on verso lightly show through at upper blank margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
