this card, dated 1869!
Signature: "Jno. A. J. Creswell/PMG.", 5x2¾ card. Imprinted:
"Autograph of" at upper left. On line imprinted "Date", Creswell has
written: "Decr 8th 1869". John Angel James Creswell (1828-1891)
served as Postmaster General under President Ulysses S. Grant from March
6th 1869 until he tendered his resignation on July 6th 1874. An attorney and
later president of two banks, Creswell had begun his political career in
Maryland's House of Delegates (1861-1862) before serving as a U.S.
Representative (1863-1865) and U.S. Senator (1865-1867). A candidate
for the 1868 Republican nomination for Vice President, Creswell was later a
counsel for the U.S. for the Alabama Claims Commission
(1874-1876). Slightly soiled. Fine condition.
