Autograph Letter Signed: "Jno. A. J. Creswell", 1p, 4½x7. Washington, D.C., 1883 April 3. To "H.K. Sanderson, Esqr." Begins: "My dear Sir". In full: "In reply to yours of March 30th ulto, I have to say, that Hon. Wm. A. Richardson is now one of the Judges of the Court of Claims, and a resident of this city. Hon. James W. Marshall was First Assistant Postmaster General during the greater part of my administration of the Post Office Department. Very truly, Yours". WILLIAM ADAMS RICHARDSON (1821-1896) was Grant's Secretary of the Treasury from March 17, 1873-June 3, 1874, when he was appointed by Grant to the Massachusetts Court of Claims. JAMES WILLIAM MARSHALL (1822-1910) succeeded Creswell as Postmaster General, serving in 1874. Marshall had previously (1861-1864) been U.S. Consul at Leeds. JOHN ANGEL JAMES CRESWELL (1828-1891) served as Postmaster General under President Ulysses S. Grant from March 6th 1869 until he tendered his resignation on July 6th 1874. An attorney and later president of two banks, Creswell had begun his political career in Maryland's House of Delegates (1861-1862) before serving as a U.S. Representative (1863-1865) and U.S. Senator (1865-1867). A candidate for the 1868 Republican nomination for Vice President, Creswell was later a counsel for the U.S. for the Alabama Claims Commission (1874-1876). Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Ink slightly smudged at the "Jn" of signature. Lightly soiled. Glue stains on verso of integral leaf (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
