Engraving signed: "Jno. A. J. Creswell". B/w, 5¾x7¾ overall,
image portion 3x4½ with 1¾x2¼ portrait (two surfaces). Imprinted beneath
photograph: "John A.J. Creswell,/Postmaster General,/1869./Engraved and Printed
at the/Bureau of/Engraving/& Printing." John Angel James Creswell
(1828-1891) served as Postmaster General under President Ulysses S. Grant
from March 6th 1869 until he tendered his resignation on July 6th 1874. An
attorney and later president of two banks, Creswell had begun his political
career in Maryland's House of Delegates (1861-1862) before serving as a
U.S. Representative (1863-1865) and U.S. Senator (1865-1867). A
candidate for the 1868 Republican nomination for Vice President, Creswell was
later a counsel for the U.S. for the Alabama Claims Commission
(1874-1876). Ink has lightly spread at the flourish of the last "l" in Creswell.
