JOHN ANDERSON
Anderson signed this typed letter "John" in 1933. In it, he thanks a
Louis for writing about "Whatever power you so generously think I have over
words" in his column.
Typed letter signed "John". 1 page, 5 ¾ x 6 ¾, with Anderson's name
and New York City address printed or stamped near top edge. Oct. 18, 1933.
Addressed to "Louis". In full: "Dear Louis:- Whatever power you so
generously think I have over words quite deserts me in trying to make them say
how touched I am by your handsome praise in our paper today-how touched and, in
a curious inner way, how excited. It is a little staggering to have things like
that said right out,and I feel solemn, as if lying in state, or something.
Anyway it is a state of bliss that you think that, and have the generosity to
say it, the same generosity (if you won't think I merely returning compliments)
which so usually makes your column warmly human and comfortable. Believe me, I
am grateful, and I'll take that tour with you yet-only now I'm afraid it will
show me up. I'll have so much to live up to. Yours ever,". Anderson (c.
1897-1943, born in Pensacola, Florida) was an American playwright. He had
