Head shot of the actor and co-producer of Apocalypse Now, shown shirtless with a silver chain.
Inscribed photograph signed: "To/Rex/Best wishes/John Ashley", B/w, 8x10. John Ashley (1934-1997) was an American actor, singer, director and producer. Born John Atchley in Kansas City, Missouri, Ashley landed his first major screen appearance in Dragstrip Girl (1957) after auditioning with his girlfriend for American International Pictures (AIP). With the success of his first film, AIP signed him a nonexclusive contract for two years, which eventually led to roles in a string of beach movie favorites including Beach Party with Frankie Avalon (1963), Bikini Beach (1964) and Beach Blanket Bingo (1964). He showed his versatility as an actor when he played Hermy in the Paul Newman classic Hud (1963). In addition to acting, Ashley led a successful career in production, credited with over 20 screen works including Apocalypse Now (1980), The Quest (1982), The A-Team (for which he also narrated the first 4 seasons, 1983-1987) and Walker, Texas Ranger (1993-1994). He is also well known for a number of Philippines based horror films such as The Mad Doctor of Blood Island (1969) in which he starred. Before Ashley embarked on his career in film, he was a moderately successful singer of the 1950s. Lightly bowed and rippled. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
