JOHN CONNALLY
Letter as Treasury Secretary to band leader Barnee Breeskin, wishing he were still dancing to Breeskin's music instead of the sounds of Washington
Typed Letter signed: "John" as Secretary of the Treasury, 1 page, 7x9. Washington, D.C., 1971 August 2. On official letterhead to Barnee Breeskin, Washington, D.C. In full: "It's a hell of a long way from the Blue Room to the gridiron but you've made the transition with your talent and ability. I'm not sure we wouldn't all be better off if you weren't still playing at the Shoreham and I was dancing to your tunes rather than the tunes to which I now jig. If you and Ed Bennett Williams can produce another Sammy Baugh maybe we'll get the Redskins on the warpath again. My fondest regards, Sincerely". John B. Connally, Jr. (1917-1993) was JFK's Secretary of the Navy (1961-1962), Governor of Texas (1963-1969) and Nixon's Secretary of the Treasury (1971-1972). Riding in the same car as President Kennedy in the Dallas motorcade November 22, 1963, he was wounded in the assault which killed JFK. (A primary reason for Kennedy's trip to Texas was to try to make peace between the conservative Connally and liberal US Senator Ralph Yarborough.) Connally sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1980, but won only one delegate. Barnee Breeskin (d. 1989) was a Washington-area bandleader and public relations specialist. He composed the music for "Hail to the Redskins," the fight song of Washington's NFL team, and led the Redskins Wigwam Band in the team's early years.Multiple mailing folds. Fine condition.
