JOHN B. SWAINSON. Typed Letter signed: "John B. Swainson" as Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, 1p, 7¼x10½. Lansing, Michigan, 1974 February 11. On personal letterhead to Danny Franklin, Phoenix, Arizona. In full: "Enclosed, Mr. Franklin, is the autographed photograph you requested [not included] in your letter of January 12, 1974. I appreciate your many kind words about my public service, and hope this letter finds you enjoying good health. Sincerely". John Burley Swainson (1925-1994) lost both his legs in a land mine explosion in World War II. Lt. Governor (1959-1960) and Governor of Michigan (1961-1962), he was defeated for re-election by soon to be Republican Presidential contender George Romney. A Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court (1971-1975), he resigned after being indicted for bribery. Found innocent of the bribery charge, he was convicted of perjury for his grand jury testimony. Paperclip impression in upper left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
