JOHN BALDWIN BUCKSTONE
Handwritten sentiment of the English comic actor and theatre manager,
whose ghost is said to still haunt London's Haymarket Theatre.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Truly yours/Jno B. Buckstone",
3¼x1¼ slip of paper, affixed to a 4¾x2¾ card (2 surfaces). English
playwright, comic actor and theatre manager John Baldwin Buckstone
(1802-1879) joined a traveling company in 1821, and made his London stage
debut in 1823. He wrote the first of many plays in 1826, but authored fewer
plays as his career as a celebrated stage comic took off. (Buckstone's
appearance and unusual voice were said to add to the comic effect.) Buckstone
performed mostly at the Adelphi and Haymarket Theatres in London, and managed
the latter from 1853 to 1877. He was very successful in attracting talented
actors to his stage. Buckstone's ghost is said to haunt the Haymarket Theatre
even today; newspapers claimed that Patrick Stewart saw it in the wings,
watching his performance in Waiting for Godot in 2009. Lightly creased.
Lightly soiled. Adhesive residue on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine
condition.
