Autograph quotation signed "J.B". Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. 1 page, 6x9,
with a 1¾x2 doodle above signature. In full:"High school teachers are the most important
people in the world - except maybe for junior high school teachers". American novelist,
short story writer and educator Barth (1930-2024) began his career with two short novels,
The Floating Opera (1957) and The End of the Road (1958), both dealing with controversial
subjects. His later works include Giles Goat-Boy (1966), Chimera (1972) and The Tidewater
Tales: A Novel (1987). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Doodle, but not quotation or
signature, is lightly smeared in places. Neatly torn from binding at right edge. Random ink stains.
Folded four times and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
