JOHN BERTRAM ADAMS
Very rare! Signature of the British accelerator physicist
Signature: "John B. Adams/27/8/65", 7¼x5½. John Bertram Adams (1920-1984), his family impoverished after his father was invalided in World War I, was unable to attend college, but he showed an astonishing aptitude for physics while working in British radar labs during World War II. In 1953, he became Director of the Proton Synchrotron division of CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research). He returned to the UK in 1961 to head the Culham Fusion Laboratory, and in 1966 assumed leadership of the UK's Atomic Energy Authority. Adams returned to CERN in 1971 as lead designer of the Super Proton Synchrotron, and became Director-General of CERN in 1976. The John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science, run jointly by Oxford University and the University of London, is named in his honor. Left edge frayed. Corners lightly worn. Lightly toned. Adhesive on face. Ink notes (unknown hands) at corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
