Signature of the famed newspaper editor, publisher of Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, and proponent of the New York Public Library
Signature: "John Bigelow" in black ink, 4x1¾ card. John Bigelow (1817-1911) was co-owner and co-editor (with William Cullen Bryant) of the "New York Post" (1848-1861). Having switched his allegiance from the Democratic to Republican Party in the 1850s over the slavery issue, Bigelow was appointed by President Lincoln as Consul General and then Minister to France (1861-1866). He is given much credit for dissuading France from recognizing the Confederacy. While in Paris, Bigelow found Benjamin Franklin's previously unpublished autobiography, and arranged to have it printed (1868). He went on to write his own biography of Franklin. A close friend of Democrat Samuel Tilden, Bigelow re-entered U.S. politics to assist Tilden's rise through the New York political scene and his run for the Presidency (1876). As executor of Tilden's estate, Bigelow was instrumental in founding the New York Public Library (1896). Irregularly trimmed. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
