JOHN BOLES
Head and shoulders studio photo, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/from/John Boles/1934". B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink noteon verso dates signature exactly: Oct. 1934. John Boles (1895-1969), born in Greenville, Texas), a stage actor and singer before making his film debut in 1924, appeared in a number of feature films for Fox and as a freelancer, including Rio Rita (1929), The Desert Song (1929), Frankenstein (1931), Bottoms Up (1934), three Shirley Temple films (Stand Up and Cheer, 1934, and Curly Top and The Littlest Rebel, both 1935) and Babes in Baghdad (1952, his last film). He gave his finest performance as Stephen Dallas, poverty-stricken Barbara Stanwyck's society husband in Stella Dallas (1937). Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
