JOHN BOYLE O'REILLY
Rare! Signature from the Irish poet and Fenian rebel
Signature: "John Boyle O'Reilly", 3½x2 card. John Boyle O'Reilly (1844-1890) was an Irish-born poet, fiction writer, journalist and editor of the Boston Newspaper. Raised during the onset of the Great Irish Famine, O'Reilly was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, better known as The Fenians, for which he was imprisoned and transported to Australia to serve a sentence of 20 years of penal servitude. After a brave escape to America in 1869, O'Reilly moved to Boston where he worked as an editor and as a prominent Irish spokesperson. His works include Moondyne (1879), In Bohemia (1886) and Songs, Legends and Ballads (1878). He was married to journalist Mary Murphy with whom he had 4 daughters. In 1890, O'Reilly died of accidental poisoning with his wife's prescription medicine. Because he was suffering from insomnia and had a past record of attempted suicide (while imprisoned in Australia), it has been questioned whether or not he intended to kill himself. Nonetheless, O'Reilly has been arduously honored in both America and in Ireland, and he is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Irish-American history. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
