Signature: “John Browning”, in blue ink, 3¾x5¼. 2 unidentified signatures on verso. John
Browning (1933-2003) made his professional debut with the New York Philharmonic in
1956. In 1962, he premiered Samuel Barber's Pulitzer Prize-winning "Piano Concerto",
written especially for him, at the opening of Lincoln Center. He won a Grammy for a
recording of the same piece with the St Louis Symphony (1991). Browning was known for
sensitive performances of works of Bach, Scarlatti and others. His last performance, 8 months
before his death, was at an invitation event in the U.S. Supreme Court Building. Torn from
