JOHN BURROUGHS
John Burroughs sends an autograph letter of regret that he is not able to come at this time.
Autograph Letter Signed: "John Burroughs", 2p, 5x8. West Park, New York, 1892 August 15.Begins: "Ah, my Dear Gilchrist". In full: "You have again struck me at an unfortunate time-unfortunate for me, because I had made up my month for a visit to your hermitage during the summer. I am just back from my old home among the Catskills, & am just on the threshhold of my grape harvest, which will demand all my time for one month. Otherwise I would come to you with alacrity. Maybe in October you will want me to come & I will be at liberty." Born on his family's farm in Roxbury, New York on April 3, 1837, Burroughs, who died on a train returning from California (March 29, 1921), would be buried there on April 3, 1921, on what would have been his 84th birthday. American naturalistJohn Burroughs (1837-1921) was a prolific nature writer, penning over 243 essays on his association with birds, resulting in his nickname, "John o' Birds". A friend of Walt Whitman, Burroughs also wrote Notes on Walt Whitman as Poet and Person (1867), the first Whitman biography. In all, he penned 441 essays that were collected in 23 volumes. These works include Birds and Poets (1877), Literary Values (1902), Ways of Nature (1905) and Camping and Tramping with Roosevelt (1907). Lightly creased. Folds do not touch signature. 4 light pinhead-size stains at blank areas. Nicked edge (all intact). Overall, fine condition.
