Handwritten first stanza of author John Burroughs' poem In Blooming Orchards, signed and dated in 1906
Autograph poem signed: "John Burroughs/May 11, 1906.". 1 page, 4½x6½. In full: "Again I walk 'mid orchard/bloom/And linger long with milling/feet/I walk with night, but not in gloom/For in my heart is ample room/for pensive thoughts and musings sweet." In Blooming Orchards was published in Burroughs' poetry collection Bird and Bough (1906). Burroughs (1837-1921) was a naturalistand prolific nature writer, penning over 243 essays on his association with birds, resulting in his nickname, "John o' Birds". A friend of Walt Whitman, Burroughs also wrote Notes on Walt Whitman as Poet and Person (1867), the first Whitman biography. In all, he penned 441 essays that were collected in 23 volumes. These works include Birds and Poets (1877), Literary Values (1902), Ways of Nature (1905) and Camping and Tramping with Roosevelt (1907). Lightly foxed. Poem, but not signature, is lightly smeared but legible. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
