JOHN C. POWERS. Baseball Card signed: "John C Powers". Color, 2½x2½. Topps card no. 489 for 1959, captioned: "John C. Powers/Cincinnati Redlegs/First Base-Outfield." Major and minor league batting record through 1958 on verso. Like the fictional Crash Davis, portrayed by Kevin Costner in the film Bull Durham (1988), many minor league baseball stars never quite made it at the big league level. This was especially true before the major leagues began expanding in the 1960s. John C. Powers (1929-2001) was one of these minor league superstars. He led two minor leagues in homers while with Waco in the Big State League (1950) and New Orleans in the Southern League (1956), clouting 39 home runs each season while batting .311 and .312. In 151 games at the Major League level between 1955 and 1960, however, he hit a total of only 6 homers and batted a career .195 for four teams. Fine condition.
