most popular singers for over three decades. The baritone sang in a
remarkable variety of genres, from hymns and operas to cowboy songs and sea
shanties. He began performing with a Gilbert and Sullivan company in New
York in 1915, then moved on to hit Broadway musicals like Naughty
Marietta. In the 1920s he began to appear on opera stages, including the
Metropolitan, and many European venues. During the Depression and World War II,
his records and radio programs were popular with classical and popular audiences
alike. (Typically, his radio show opened with classical works and concluded with
popular offerings. He was the first to sing "Home on the Range.")
