Autograph letter signed: "John", in black ink, 1 page, 5½x8½.
New York City, New York. January 16, 1969. On his letterhead at the
Saturday Review, to "Dear Louis", Louis Untermeyer (1885-1977),
in full: "We've about abandoned individual revenues but in this case
the answer has to be yes. I'd love about 800 words by you on Wilburs new book
and somehow I'll wrassle the reface from Rochelle (Fredragon) Guson. Happy to
permit "The Happy Family". Forgive scrawl: I'm about to run for the plane to San
Juan and a week in the sun. All joy,". Accompanied by his unsigned, hand
addressed envelope to Louis Untermeyer, Newtown, Connecticut. John Ciardi
(1916-1986) was an influential American poet of the 20th century, most
famous for his work in translation and etymology. An author of over forty books
including Homeward to America (1940), I Marry You
(1958) and The Birds of Pompeii (1985), Ciardi famously translated
Dante's Divine Comedy, premiering with The Inferno
in 1954. He was the recipient of several awards, including the 1956 Prix de Rome
from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was a longtime contributor to
The Saturday Review. Normal mailing folds. Fine
