JOHN COLLINGS SQUIRE
The influential post-WWI literary figure writes letter on official London Mercury letterhead, informing recipient that there are no positions available in his office, signs name in black ink
Typed letter signed: "J.C. Squire" in black ink. 1 page, 8x10¼. Written on personal The London Mercury letterhead. London, England. February 15, 1928. Addressed to G.E.H. Grigson, Esq. of South Cornwall. In full: "Dear Sir, I am sorry that there is no vacancy, or prospect of one, in this office. But I should like to see you when you come to London, as I think we might talk about things with some profit. Will you telephone when you come, and arrange an appointment with my secretary? Yours faithfully". John Collings Squire (1884-1958) was a British poet, writer, historian, and influential literary editor in the post-WWI era. He began his career as a literary journalist for the publication New Age, which promoted Fabian socialism, later moving on to serve as editor of the New Statesman and as founder of the London Mercury in 1919. Over this period he gained considerable influence over literary circles, becoming the unofficial leader of poets and critics sharing an aversion towards Modernism, nicknamed the "Squirearchy". His own poems include books such as The Three Hills (1913), American Poems (1923), and A Face in the Candlelight (1932). His other works include the collection of short stories The Grub Street Nights' Entertainment (1924) and two volumes of memoirs The Honeysuckle and the Bee (1937) and Water-Music (1939). Normal mailing folds. Binding holes in left margin. Very toned. Edges torn and frayed. Creased throughout, especially corners. Stain in top margin. Small pinpoint stains throughout. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
