JOHN CROSBY
B/w 7x9 bust photo of journalist John Crosby in a suit and tie, signed with his "Best wishes" in blue ink in 1961
Inscribed photograph signed "Best wishes to Morrison Jr. HS/5/31/61/John Crosby" in blue ink. Red and lead pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. B/w, 7x9 overall, 6½x8½ image, one surface. In his New York Times obituary, American writer Crosby (1912-1991) was quoted as saying that being "a radio columnist is forced to be literate about the illiterate, witty about the witless, coherent about the incoherent." Crosby was began his career as a reporter in 1933 and was a columnist for the the New York Herald-Tribune from 1946 to 1965. Known for his wit and erudition, his column began by covering radio and, in 1952, television before evolving into a general column. He saved some of his best quotes for television. About Edward R. Murrow's See It Now, he said, "See it Now... is by every criterion television's most brilliant, most decorated, most imaginative, most courageous and most important program. The fact that CBS cannot afford it but can afford Beat the Clock is shocking." Crosby also hosted the TV show The Seven Lively Arts (1957-1958) and wrote espionage and adventure novels, including 1983's Men in Arms. Lightly toned, soiled, cracked, creased and bowed. Signature is lightly beaded and has low contrast in places, but is legible. Discolorations in bottom right corner. Paper clip impression in top left corner. Light impressions on image (not visible head-on). Rounded and worn corners. Otherwise in fine condition.
