JOHN EHRLICHMAN
Excerpt from Witness to Power signed by President Nixon's
former counsel in black ink
Typescript signed: "John Ehrlichman", 1p, 8½x11. Headed:
"An excerpt from/Witness to Power/by/John Ehrlichman". In part: "Richard
Nixon seldom spoke to anyone while riding in an elevator. Nevertheless, the
first time he ever spoke to me was in a hotel elevator in Milwaukee. He really
didn't want to, and his acknowledgment of my presence was perfunctory. But I was
on (sic, one) of his new advance men, recruited by H.R. Haldeman for the
1960 Presidential campaign...." One word addition in Ehrlichman's hand.
John Ehrlichman (1925-1999) was President Nixon's Domestic Affairs
Advisor. After being implicated in the Watergate cover-up by John Dean,
Ehrlichman was asked by Nixon to resign. He was convicted of obstruction of
justice, conspiracy and perjury and was sentenced to four to eight years in
October 1976. He spent 18 months behind bars. Ehrlichman wrote several
fiction and nonfiction books, including Witness to Power (1982), his
memoir of the White House years. Ehrlichman, embittered by Nixon's failure to
pardon him while in office, was highly critical of the President in that memoir.
